Gin Ichimaru is the captain of the 3rd Division at the start of the series. He joins Sōsuke Aizen for whom he was once a lieutenant in the 5th Division, in defecting from the Soul Reapers at the conclusion of the Soul Society arc. His zanpakuto, Shinsō, has the ability to extend a great amount at high speeds to pierce his enemies, but its true power involves turning to dust momentarily while it secretes a deadly poison capable of breaking down cells.
